Greystar in Texas: Lawsuits, Settlements and Tenant Complaints

A flat Texas horizon under heavy clouds with apartment towers and a distant construction crane carrying one small red light.

The Greystar Review holds 8 sourced records for Texas, led by a 2023 Dallas jury verdict over a fatal crane collapse, plus a 2026 report on fees, an overtime suit and tenant reviews.

The most consequential Texas record is a jury verdict. On April 26, 2023, a Dallas County jury awarded about $860 million to the parents of a resident killed when a tower crane at a Greystar development collapsed onto the neighboring Elan City Lights apartments during a June 2019 storm. The Real Deal reports that plaintiffs argued Greystar let the crane's inspection lapse and was responsible for the crane not being left in weathervane mode, and that the jury found crane owner Bigge not liable. Post-trial status is not confirmed in the record.

The Dallas crane collapse

FOX 4 reported a verdict of more than $860 million for the family of the resident who was killed, finding Greystar bore responsibility and that Bigge Crane was not at fault. Earlier, FOX 4 covered the aftermath: the crane fell on the Greystar-owned Elan City Lights on June 9, 2019, killing a resident and injuring five others, and displaced tenants described uncertainty as Greystar's hotel and daily-needs payments were set to end that Friday.

What the verdict does and does not show

The two verdict reports agree on the central points: a Dallas County jury, an award of roughly $860 million, the 2019 storm, and a finding that crane supplier Bigge was not liable. They differ slightly in emphasis. The Real Deal describes plaintiffs' arguments about a lapsed inspection and the crane not being left in weathervane mode, while FOX 4 describes the jury as finding that Greystar bore responsibility. The records do not say whether the verdict was appealed, reduced or paid, and this page does not assume any outcome. Readers looking for current status should check the Dallas County district court docket.

Fees reporting

In June 2026, KUT and Texas Standard discussed the Guardian's findings of 125 named fees at Greystar listings. The report notes Greystar manages about 200,000 units in Texas and that some leases carry five to eleven mandatory fees on top of rent. For a fee settlement, see the Colorado report.

Employment litigation

Norris v. Greystar Management Services LP (N.D. Tex., 3:17-cv-01956) is a proposed Fair Labor Standards Act collective action alleging non-discretionary bonuses were left out of the regular rate used to compute overtime. It was filed in July 2017; the outcome is not confirmed.
